OCCULT U.S.A.: The Process Church of the Final Judgment — A Cinefamily Event

August 21st, 2009 · No Comments · Entertainment, Religion

The Cinefamily programs a lot of great stuff at the Silent Movie Theater in Hollywood (I was sad to miss the recent double-feature battle of Lambada vs. The Forbidden Dance). And it’s not just movies they have on offer. There’s an interesting program coming up this weekend about the Process Church of the Final Judgment.
Scientology? [...]

Gay marriage as natural experiment

August 20th, 2009 · No Comments · Politics

If gay marriage really is as bad as some people believe, we should soon see the demise of Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine, Iowa, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.
I mean, once the gays start storming the borders and getting married all over the place, the fragile bonds holding society together in those states will surely burst, unleashing [...]

“Science” of Evil

August 14th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

This is either the worst bit of science reporting I’ve seen in a long time, or else the worst bit of science I’ve seen in a long time… AND the worst bit of science reporting, for not pointing that out.  They wanted to define evil, so they:
He and his research team began developing their computer [...]

Hollywood scam watch: Lotto cons, elderly Latinos, the LAPD, and Judas Priest

August 13th, 2009 · Comments Off · Skepticism

My neighborhood’s police report includes an item about a gang of scammers in east Hollywood preying on elderly folks in a home-grown variation of an advance-fee fraud (related to 419 scams/pigeon drops).
Interesting to note that one old-timer sensed something was amiss, but went along with the crooks anyway. She should have trusted her gut. Judas [...]

Wooing Of The Beast

August 11th, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

After being inspired by TAM I thought I would give a go at a skeptical pet type blog. I only have one entry so far, but a bunch of ideas.

Any ideas, proofreading and suggestions would be fantabulous.

Arnold Kling on Freedom

August 11th, 2009 · No Comments · Politics

Democracy is not the be-all, end-all of human political achievement; Democracy is two people stranded on an island voting to eat the third.
True, it shifts the monopoly of power from a single person (or small group of individuals) to a nebulous abstraction known as “The People”.  But if you want to overthrow a malevolent government, [...]

Get out of my dreams and into my Cārvāka

August 5th, 2009 · No Comments · Philosophy, Religion

I just picked up Doubt: A History, by Jennifer Michael Hecht. Great book so far, covering a lot of familiar historical territory with a slightly new twist on it.
There’s plenty of unfamiliar territory for me as well. I don’t know much about the history of India (except that it seems to have culminated in Shahrukh [...]

LA Times evaluation of “longevity gurus”

August 3rd, 2009 · 1 Comment · Health

Look at me! I’m posting!
The Health section of the LA Times on July 13th 2009 focused on aging and longevity. This article by Marnell Jameson is pretty interesting. There’s a little blurb about a bunch of the longevity gurus throughout the last century. The article is well written and lets some reasonable and skeptical doctors [...]
