Philosophers and God’s Lawyers

In his Theaetetus Plato argues that philosophers are free while lawyers are slaves. What he had in mind was that philosophers, insofar as they are philosophers (lovers of wisdom), follow their reason wherever it might lead, while lawyers are assigned an arbitrary initial position and are required to bend reason and evidence accordingly. Christian “philosophers” (apologists), for example, are God’s lawyers.
